  Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain, also called stomach ache, is pain and discomfort that occurs in your abdomen. Your abdomen is the section of your torso between your chest and your pelvis. Everyone experiences abdominal pain from time to time. Abdominal pain can be mild or severe. Abdominal pain can be short-lived (acute) or occur over weeks and months (chronic).

Whether it is a mild stomach ache, sharp pain or stomach cramps, abdominal pain has the following common causes. These may include:

Indigestion
Constipation
Stomach "flu"
Menstrual cramps
Food poisoning
Food allergies
Gas
Lactose intolerance
Ulcers
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Hernia
Gallstones
Kidney stones
Endometriosis
Crohn's disease
Urinary tract infection (UTI)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Treating abdominal pain depends on its cause. This can range from medications for inflammation, GERD or ulcers, to antibiotics for infections, to changes in personal behavior for abdominal pain caused by certain foods or beverages. In some cases such as appendicitis and hernia, surgery is necessary.

Traditional Chinese medicine can treat various gastrointestinal disorders and pains. Not only do they control the symptoms, they often change the underlying constitution of the body to achieve long-term results. Each patient will be treated as an individual. Optimal results will be obtained with both Chinese herbs and acupuncture when specific treatments are customized for each patient.
