Allergy

An allergy is a reaction of your immune system to an ordinarily harmless substance. The sensitizing substances (allergens), may be inhaled, swallowed, or come into contact with the skin (such as
poison ivy allergy). Substances that most frequently cause problems are

• Pollen
• Dust mites
• Mold spores
• Pet dander
• Food
• Insect stings
• Medicines

When an allergic person’s immune system is triggered by an allergen, it causes some degree of inflammation.  Allergies may cause a runny nose (rhinitis), sneezing, itching, rashes, swelling or asthma.  Allergic symptoms are usually treated with the following medications:

• Oral antihistamines
•  Nasal antihistamines
•  Decongestants
•  Nasal sprays

The medications only treat the manifestations of the disease and not the root. In addition, they cause side-effects such as dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, nervousness, dryness, and gastro-intestinal disturbance.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) includes Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture. TCM has been used to treat allergies for thousands of years. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can alleviate the symptoms of allergies when they are active and more importantly, can correct the immune system imbalance that leads to substantial long-term health benefits in managing allergies. Traditional Chinese medicine has been proven safe and effective without adverse side effects. If you would like to pursue this form of treatment or information, please contact Xiaoyan.
